Must Buy Games in September 2017

Prepare yourself for a month filled with great new game releases. I hope you have been saving your money up as there are going to be more games in this list than in previous months and I’m pretty certain you will agree that most of these are genuinely ‘must buy’ games. Here is my selection for September (don’t say I didn’t warn you!).

LEGO Worlds

Platforms: Nintendo Switch (already available on Xbox One, PS4 and PC)
Release Date: 5th September

LEGO Worlds is not a new game by definition since the game has already released on consoles and PC but now it is time for the Nintendo Switch version to make an appearance. The game is like a more structured version of Minecraft where you have more quests and storyline to uncover with the option of building freely in creative mode. This type of game suits the Nintendo Switch as you are able to dip in on the go and explore, build and more. Whilst Minecraft is also on the Switch, this game does provide something different so fans of sandbox games should take a look at this!

Destiny 2

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Release Date: 6th September

I put many hours into the first Destiny game and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Destiny 2 looks to continue from where the first game left off with more storyline to uncover but more importantly, improvements on the first games more noticeable pitfalls. The game is designed to feel less grindy with more places to visit, varied quests to complete and a steady stream of loot to keep you wanting more! The game play feels largely to same and that is not a bad thing since the combat was never a problem in the original Destiny. In short, Destiny 2 looks to be bigger and better than its predecessor and that means it’s inevitable that I will buy it and enjoy it! If you have played the beta for Destiny 2 I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

Monster Hunter Stories

Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: 8th September

Monster Hunter is well renowned in the Nintendo-sphere as previous games have proved popular on the 3DS system. Now, there is another spin off for fans to try and the whole concept of this game sounds very appealing. Explore worlds, steal eggs, hatch them and train your own monsters to aid you in battle in this turn based strategy game. If you are thinking this sounds a lot like Pokemon then you would be right but if you are a fan of Pokemon games then this could be a great spin off for you to get your teeth into! Check out the trailer and decide for yourself.

Metroid: Samus Returns

Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: 15th September

As a Metroid Prime fan, is it great to see some games coming out that bring back fond memories of Samus in his prime! Puns aside, this Metroid game reimagines the 1991 Gameboy version of Metroid II: Return Of Samus for Nintendo 3DS. The recent livestream of the game during Gamescom 2017 showed off some nice game play for fans of the Metroid series and will at least act as a makeweight during the long wait until Metroid Prime 4 is released. Try out some new features to the side scrolling version of Metroid such as melee counters, free firing at any angle and host of new abilities. I for one welcome the return of Samus!

Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Release Date: 19th September

The Marvel VS Capcom games have always been great fun. They take the over the top attacks of the super heroes from the Marvel Universe and mash them together with some of the equally over the top attacks from the Capcom series such as Street Fighter and Mega Man. With a host of characters included in this game with what looks like an interesting storyline, at least from little I saw in the demo, we could have an impressive fighting game to rival Tekken 7 as the best fighting game of 2017. Obviously, both fighting styles will be different but let’s just say if you’re more Street Fighter than Tekken 7 then Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite is a must buy fighting game for you. Try out the demo if you’re sitting on the fence!

Pokken Tournament DX

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release Date: 22nd September

Looks like Pokemon’s rise to prominence is set to continue at this braling game finally arrives on the Nintendo Switch. For anyone who didn’t own a Wii U this is a welcomed addition to the games catalogue on Switch and having played the demo I thoroughly enjoyed the game play. Whilst the number of characters was a bit lacking I really enjoyed the fighting style in Pokken Tournament DX and reminded me of similar anime brawlers such as One Piece Burning Blood. This may not be Pokemon’s best game on Switch with an overly hyped RPG style game expected at some point in the future but it will definitely appease fans until the next RPG game arrives on Switch, and playing with your friends using one set of joy-cons is a bonus!

Cuphead

Platforms: Xbox One, PC
Release Date: 29th September

Cuphead looks like a unique platforming, run and gun game that brings to life old fashioned cartoon style graphics to a modern console. The game play looks like a lot of fun with some quite whacky looking characters and bosses to overcome. The basic gist of the game is Cuphead, your character, loses a bet with the devil you must repay your debt. This involves completing boss battles containted within individual levels, each with their own unique game play mechanics. Cuphead’s charm is in it’s graphics though that truly gives the impression you are creating your own cartoon from the 1930’s and there is the added bonus that you can play with a friend too in couch co-op. It may not be setting the Xbox One exclusives list on fire but it should definitely not be missed if you own an Xbox One!

FIFA 18

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Switch
Release Date: 29th September

A new FIFA game is release in September every year containing usually new updated graphics, games modes and game play mechanics. My general feedback of FIFA tends to swing in roundabouts, mostly dependent on how good I think I am at the game. FIFA 17 returned some of the games former glory but I am holding out for a good showing in FIFA 18. With this also available on Switch, it might be a good time to switch my console of choice to something that allows me to play and practice more often. This game is in this selection by default, it may not be the best FIFA but let’s face it, if you have bought a previous FIFA game you will most likely buy this game at some point. In which case, I’ll see you on the pitch!

  1. I want to buy Cuphead. I want to show it off to my friends and family. I want to be ‘in on the conversation around it’, but I fear the games going to be so insanely difficult that I end up skipping it entirely. At least, that’s what I’ve heard from various people who have played it. What a shame it’d be if *that* game ended up being too difficult for the vast majority of people to enjoy.

As for Destiny 2. I put over 160 hours into original Destiny without really playing with friends. As of right now, I think I’m going to skip Destiny 2. Not because I’m not interested in it, but because I honestly don’t see a way I could build that into my progressively narrowing gaming time. And that makes me sad.

    1. Cuphead difficulty isn’t putting me off just yet but I will definitely keep an eye out since I have not heard any player feedback until your comment. I’m easily frustrated with difficult games!

An overwhelming games library is the curse of every gamer! When you get round to Destiny I’m sure you will spend over 100 hours in it!
