Monthly Free Games in May 2017

Too many games and not enough time to play them all, unless of course you decide to give up on the rest of life and dedicate yourself solely to gaming! Despite a growing list of games on all our must play lists there is a new selection of free games coming to console that you won’t want to miss. So which ones should you download and play in this coming month?

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Director’s Cut

Platforms: Xbox One

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Director’s Cut is a colourful platformer that aims to combine the challenge of retro platformers with modern day graphics and it does this very well. With some of the game play pertaining to a Sonic style game it looks like a game that truly lives up to it’s promise and this makes it all the more tempting to purchase. With the recent slew of platformers making their way onto console then it may be a tough decision to play this above others but considering it is free then it should definitely be a consideration. Described as revolutionary for its introduction of dual reality system, it combines fun game play with original concepts to deliver something unlike any other game you will play so the real question is, why not? Available from 1st May to 31st May.

IGN Score: 9/10
Metacritic Score: 69%
Gamespot Score: 8/10

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

Platforms: Xbox One

This may be a Lara Croft game but this game pales in comparison to the mainstream Tomb Raider games but this game at least serves a purpose. My biases aside, if you like top down puzzle games then this is one of the better choices out there and it even allows for couch co-op, up to 4 players! The story line looks to be one of the more ridiculous but don’t let me ruin your fun. As a sequel to the popular Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, this game looks to continue in a similar vein and with delight fans of this genre no end, I’m sure. Download for free from May 16 – June 15.

IGN Score: 8.1/10
Metacritic Score: 74%
Gamespot Score: 7/10

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One

There have been a fair few Star Wars games throughout gaming history and it looks like another Star Wars game has made its way onto this month’s list of free games. But is this one of the better Star Wars game? Sadly, it is not. To put it quite simply the game may not win the title of ‘worst game ever’ but when it comes down to whether you should play this above any other Star Wars game then it comes pretty far down the list. The story arc stays true to the original films but this is really the only positive thing to say about the game. There are confusing difficulty spikes and repetitive enemies make this game quite under whelming, even for a Star Wars game. If you played the first game in this series then feel free to check it out, you may like it but the rest of you should download the other free games this month. Available from 1st May.

IGN Score: 6.5/10
Metacritic Score: 61%
Gamespot Score: 6/10

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One

For those disappointed by the previous game on the list then you will be happy to see the inclusion of a Star Wars game worthy of your time. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga may not be realistic and true to the Star Wars story in a literal sense but that is OK since it combines a certain level of humour with traditional Star Wars scenes to create a fun experience. With a story mode, free play and arcade mode there is enough in this game to keep you geeking out on Star Wars and LEGO for many hours to come. Just don’t expect the newer films and characters to make an appearance in this game. Available to download from 16th May.

IGN Score: 8/10
Metacritic Score: 80%
Gamespot Score: 7/10

Alienation (Europe Only)

Platforms: PS4

Alienation is the first of the free games for PlayStation but be warned, this is only for players in Europe. For the first time, at least that I have seen, there will be a different title for those in Europe and America and in all honesty, the Americans have got the better end of the deal. Alienation is not a bad a game since its top down, alien shooting action is a lot of fun but this genre extremely overcrowded which means it will probably be a game you play once and never come back to.

IGN Score: 8.7/10
Metacritic Score: 79%
Gamespot Score: 8/10

Abzu (North America Only)

Platforms: PS4

Having already competed Abzu, I can vouch for how good this game is. If you are a fan of Journey or any game with a strong narrative then this game is definitely worth playing. For me this game should be categorised as ‘unmissable’. Your under water adventure as a diver will be one that delivers such a wondrous experience, comparable to real life scuba diving.  It may be a short experience but this criticism of the game is the only one that I agree with. If I hadn’t already played this game I would be gutted that this won’t be available in the UK but if you’re lucky enough to be in the USA then make sure you download this for free!

IGN Score: 8.4/10
Metacritic Score: 78%
Gamespot Score: 9/10

Tales from the Borderlands

Platforms: PS4

Tales from the Borderlands is a fantastic story game from Telltale games. These guys were the brains behind the masterclass Walking Dead series and from other very good story games such as The Wolf Among Us. In every Telltale game, the choices you make have an impact on how the story unfolds and this is once again very true for Tales from the Borderlands. If you are a fan of Borderlands then this game will compliment the Borderlands series perfectly. Full of action and great characters, it won’t matter that the Borderlands story is told in a uniquely different way. Just download for free and enjoy it whilst you can!

IGN Score: 8.7/10
Metacritic Score: 85%
Gamespot Score: 9/10

Blood Knights

Platforms: PS3

I watched the trailer for Blood Knights and the first line was enough for me to decide this game would not be for me. A war between man and vampire is a touch too close to the Twilight series and inevitably means that I cannot take the game seriously. Based on the user review scores, it’s probably a good thing I didn’t go in with a more positive mindset. Dubbed as a ‘sexy action-RPG game’ it fall very far from the mark as this ‘game’ is more of an annoyance to play than it is fun. Avoid this game, it’s not worth it even if it is free!

Metacritic Score: 43%

Port Royale 3: Pirates and Merchants

Platforms: PS3

Based on this month’s selection of free games, all I can say it that I’m glad I don’t just own a PS3. For anyone who is still playing their games on a PS3, I think the poor selection of free games this month should be inspiration enough to upgrade to modern gen! Port Royale 3 is a simulation game that is trying to emulate life during a pirate era but it does a bad job of making this experience fun. It may look good and have smooth game play but what is the point if the game play is unrewarding and boring. This is another game that is not worth your time and should make any PS3 player question if their Playstation Plus membership is still worth the price considering the same service on other consoles is displaying far more value for money. This is a definite avoid.
