Scalebound Cancelled by Microsoft

If the idea of Scalebound coming to console was whetting the appetite then prepare to be disappointed. Microsoft have revealed that they have cancelled production of the Xbox exclusive and has even begun to remove all of the videos containing the game from their Youtube channel. In fact, they are removing all affiliation with the game as even Major Nelson is removing any videos that show Scalebound in relation to Microsoft.

Scalebound Turns Fail-bound

From an outsider’s perspective you would have been right to assume that this game would end up like any other release. There may have been delays in productions and niggles in the final game but it would release with the usual hype that surrounds other major releases. However, the signs of failure were there. The game was severely delayed in autumn last year when the development team were forced to take a month off due to workload. The relationship seemed beyond repair after that, further compounding the decline in the relationship when the production on the game stopped at the end of last year.

Some can’t hide the disappointment in the Scalebound news

The rest is now history as Microsoft decided it would no longer continue with the Scalebound project. The following statement was made:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing line-up of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”

CEO at Platinum Games, Kenichi Sato, responded to disappointed fans with the following:

“We’re sorry to say that on January 9th, 2017, Microsoft Studios announced the cancellation of Scalebound.

“We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.

“Going forward, we will strive to continue delivering high-quality games to you, starting with NieR:Automata in March, and including products like Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link and Lost Order in the future.

“We will keep working hard to meet your expectations and we look forward to your continued support.”

If you were expecting to take on a world filled with dragons then maybe bearded dragons are your next best alternative, at least until we find out whether this game will be picked up by anyone else. Despite Microsoft cutting ties, the Scalebound videos currently remain on the Platinum Games Twitter page. Will this mean the game can be revived? Here’s hoping!
