Top 10 Games of 2016

As the year draws to a close in the coming weeks, we look back at the games that released this year and I name my top 10 games of 2016 that stood shoulders above the rest across all gaming platforms. These games will range from blockbusters to memorable indie games. If you haven’t played any of the games on this list then it’s a good thing it’s Christmas next week! Get you last minute additions to your Xmas lists now!

10. Planet Coaster

Platforms: PC

Planet Coaster made a triumphant rise to fame in the latter part of 2016 as the developers of the original Rollercoaster Tycoon try their hand at another roller coaster simulation game. The game has received very positive feedback on Steam and looks to be a big hit with many gamers. There are hours of game play in Planet Coaster and despite an underlying feeling of repetitiveness, the game feels new every time you play it when you tap into your imagination. This is the Minecraft of theme park simulations!

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Abzu has been a nice surprise this year with many gamers drawing comparisons to Journey. The art style and soundtrack will remind you of Journey but all credit to Giant Squid for making a game that feels so unique. The game play may appear simplistic but the real satisfaction is in unraveling the complex story as you take control of a mysterious diver exploring an underwater world filled with mystery. Anyone who has a keen interest in nautical mythology will love there his game!

8. The Witcher 3

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

The Witcher 3 has been well received by the entire gaming community. There are vast landscapes and some detailed story telling but the main area where this game excels is in the action. Combat has never felt so fluid in a Witcher game and you’re left feeling like and bad ass after every confrontation! The game is so big that when you start playing this game you know you will be in it for the long haul. None of that matters though as you will enjoy every moment of this game!

7. Overcooked

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Overcooked has been a surprise hit of 2016. I initially played this game with significant skepticism but had soon played through the entire game and left with a feeling of wanting to play more levels. Those of you that have friends to play games with will get the full Overcooked experience as this will become an instant party hit resulting in arguments coupled with lots of high fiving and cheering. Chop and cook your way to glory in this manic cooking game and do it now!

6. Firewatch

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Firewatch is a game that has split opinion right down the middle. Dubbed as as walking simulator, there is huge emphasis on the story rather than the game play itself. I am of the opinion that the story was incredible and I was ultimately satisfied with the choices I made and how things played out. Even now I wonder what could have been had I had the choice to do something differently but that is the beauty of this game. The characters are played so well that the story remains long after you finish the game. Even now people are theorising on the outcome of this game. If you haven’t tried it yet then I urge you to find the time and enjoy the ride!

5. Titanfall 2

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

As with many gamers, I grew up playing mostly first person shooters and they somewhat dominated my gaming collection across multiple consoles. The problem with many modern first person shooters is that they have lost their identity with Call of Duty coming to mind here. Where Titanfall 2 shines is in its fine tuning to an already polished game. Where the first game lacked a campaign and meaningful leveling system in multiplayer, the sequel has more than made up for it. This could be described as a  perfect shooter and is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. Plus they have giant robots! You will be playing for hours and that’s just the campaign. No reason not to buy this game at full price right now. Go go go!

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Sometimes we all need to play  game like INSIDE to truly appreciate the game development. This game was the follow up from Limbo developers, Playdead. Where Limbo felt rough around the edge, INSIDE feels near perfection. This puzzle based platformer has some great game play but the eerie background and mysterious story revelations result in the player being truly engrossed in the story until the end.The game may be short but it will be hard to forget the outcome of this game by the end. A must have in your game collection.

3. ClusterTruck

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

ClusterTruck is probably one of the most simplistic games I have played in 2016 but this does not affect the fun factor in the slightest. In short, the floor is lava and trucks are your friends. Jumping across the different worlds is terrifying, exhilarating and frustrating all at the same time. Use your power ups to help you get through the levels but be prepared to fail many times before you reach the end. There may not seem like much to the game but even if you complete all the levels quickly then you will keep going back to try out some of the more ridiculous power ups in previous levels. If you haven’t played this game then you need it in your life!

2. Overwatch

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

No surprises here to see one of the most popular games in 2016 near the top of this list but Overwatch deserves all the praise it gets. No other shooter this year has felt so fresh and dynamic with huge emphasis on teamwork and strategy. With so many characters to choose from, each with their own unique battle style it is easy to get hooked on a few for long periods of time before moving on to someone else. The game modes are also a nice change from the usual team deathmatch and others with many complimenting the strategy of specific characters. If you have been looking for a first person shooter to play since CoD went downhill then this will he the one you need to play!

 1. Forza Horizon 3

Platforms: Xbox One

Forza Horizon 3 makes its stake at no.1 on my list and for good reason too. Despite my biases towards a gaming franchise that has never failed to keep me entertained there is something here for everyone to enjoy and you don’t need to be a car buff to enjoy it. Even if driving through Australia was all you wanted to do then this game is possibly the best place to do it outside of the real thing. Drive to become the best, beat your friends or just to explore the beautiful landscapes, it’s completely your choice and you won’t be disappointed with any of your decisions. Forza Horizon 3 is gaming perfection and is the stand out game of 2016.
