Rollercoaster Simulation Showdown

If there was one PC game that I was truly addicted to as a child it was Rollercoaster Simulation game, Rollercoaster Tycoon. Looking back now, my memories are filled with fondness and nostalgia as I built my ultimate theme park in the first true sandbox game. If I played the exact same game now then I don’t doubt I could spend hours building the perfect rollercoaster but why play the original when there are two new, upcoming rollercoaster games coming, one from the developers of the original RCT! It may be surprising to some to find out that new game; RCT World is not the game I am referring to but rather Planet Coaster which is developed by Frontier Developments. With only 1 day between their release dates, all budding theme park simulation enthusiasts will be desperate to find out which one is the better choice!

Rollercoaster Tycoon World

Release Date: 16th November

Rollercoaster Tycoon is a brand that has been known since the late 90’s, gaining a cult following for its inventive game play and free license to build to your will’s desire. Think of a Minecraft equivalent for rollercoasters. Frontier Developments made this game great and continued its success into two further rollercoaster simulation games. However, for one reason or another, Frontier were not involved in future RCT games and opted to go down a new venture. Rollercoaster Tycoon is now developed by Nvizzio Creations and published by Atari. In short the game is not what is used to be.

Roller Coaster Tycoon World is currently available on Steam for Early Access. With this becoming an increasingly used tactic for releasing games it has not done much to help the new developers make a truly great Rollersoaster simulation game. The reviews on Steam reflect this as the overall rating is mostly negative with many citing game crashes, poor imitation of the original series and generally lacking any fun. Harsh words but unfortunately these opinions speak volumes as the RCT brand has been dealt a real blow. Even after the train crash of a game; Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 for mobile, you would think there would be more urgency to make the game great again but it has dawned on many customers of Rollercoaster Tycoon World that they should have waited for Planet Coaster which is much closer to the original series.

Planet Coaster

Release Date: 17th November

If you haven’t guessed by now, Frontier Developments decided they would go off and create Planet Coaster following their success with RCT. What a wise decision that turned out to be. The did try their hand at releasing a rollercoaster simulation game that was less about building a construction but more about destruction in the form of Screamride. Although fun it was not the sandbox, theme park game that people wanted. Now they have delivered what the public were asking for. Planet Coaster has been unshackled from the damaged Rollercoaster Tycoon brand and is starting to gain quite a following in the gaming community.

Planet Coaster is very much like the original RCT games but designed for the modern gamer. The graphics are stunning for a simulation game and look realistic from certain viewpoints. The building experience is intuitive and the challenges are fun but also, well, challenging. This game offers so much in terms of content and freedom but also makes you work for it giving the player a real sense of achievement that a game of this stature requires. Once you have built your theme park then it is so satisfying to sit back and watch the money come flying in! Theme Park management mastery!

Knocked Out The Park!

Many Rollercoaster Tycoon fans will be disappointed to hear that the original games are now a part of history with many player desperate for more RCT games to be made in the current market. Fortunately, RCT’s loss is Planet Coaster’s gain as the original RCT game developers have restored this simulation game to its former glory! You may have to wait one more day for Planet Coaster to release but it will be well worth the wait, even if it’s just to avoid the crushing disappointment of seeing what RCT has become. I would pick Planet Coaster every time!
